Understanding Safe Grades

Graded Safes Explained

Everything you need to know — answered clearly.

If you are considering a graded safe, it is natural to have questions about how the grading system works, why insurers often request them, and what the different certifications and standards mean. The questions below cover some of the most common things customers ask and provide helpful explanations to guide you in choosing the right level of protection.

What is a graded safe?

A safe that has been independently tested and certified under EN 1143-1. It has passed a sustained, timed physical attack using specialist tools under controlled conditions — and been awarded a grade based on the level of resistance it demonstrated.

Why does my insurer require one?

Ungraded safes carry no third-party certification — your insurer has no way to confirm they will resist a real attack. A graded safe gives them verified assurance. If a claim is made and the correct grade was in place, your cover is valid. If not, it may not be.

What does EN 1143-1 mean?

The European testing standard for resistance to burglary. Safes are subjected to sustained attack using specialist tools under controlled conditions. Only safes that pass are assigned a grade — and that grade is what your insurer recognises.

What does BS 7582:2021 mean?

The British Standard for reconditioning security containers. It governs inspection, lock replacement, structural integrity and certification. Every safe we supply is reconditioned and certified to this standard before it leaves our facility.

Can a reconditioned safe lose its grade?

The grade is tied to the physical construction — steel, barrier materials, and boltwork — not the locks or cosmetic finish. Reconditioning restores the operational components without altering the structure, so the grade is retained in full.

Does a reconditioned safe count for insurance?

Yes — a professionally reconditioned safe retains its original EN 1143-1 grade and is accepted by UK insurers when reconditioned to BS 7582:2021. Our reconditioning certificate confirms the grade and standard, giving your insurer exactly what they need.
